POSOW training course in Zadar

The Adriatic Training and Research Centre for Response to Accidental Marine Pollution (ATRAC), in cooperation with the Zadar County, has organized professional training titled "Cleaning the seashore and wildlife in the event of accidental marine pollution by oil and oil products" held on 19 and 20 May 2015. in the premises of the IMPACT centre in Zadar, Put Stanova bb.

The training program, based on the Project POSOW, is designed according for the project HAZADR partner's needs. There were held four training modules: (i) assessment of contaminated coastline, (ii) shoreline clean-up, (iii) management of volunteer’s work in the event of contamination, and (iv) wildlife rehabilitation.

The participants of this professional training were operators, professionals and volunteers, who work in national and/or county Civil Protection, the local government and established non-governmental organizations (NGOs) active in the Istria, Primorje-Gorski Kotar, Split-Dalmatia and Zadar County, and also Montenegro.

POSOW training courses

Adriatic educational and research centre for accidental marine pollution preparedness and response, together with the partners of the Project - Zadar County, Region Marche and the National Institute of Biology in Piran held a training courses based on POSOW model. These Project partners, in agreement with the other Project partners, have offered a household for the POSOW training courses.

POSOW model courses are designed for volunteers and other operational staff involved in land sites response who have very little or no previous knowledge of shoreline geography and oil descriptions respectively properties and behavior of spilled oil. The first such course was held in Zadar, May 19 to 20, the second in Ancona on May 22 to 23 and the third in Piran 25 -26 May 2015.

The courses held attended by a total of 87 perticipants from various voluntary organizations dealing with the protection of the fauna of the marine environment, civil protection and specialized response companies. All courses were held in a very positive working atmosphere with exchange of experiences of all the participants and speakers at the training courses.

The last of the planned POSOW courses will be held in Durres, 23 -24 June 2015 year. As it was agreed before, the householder of the course is a Albanian Project partner - Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

IMO OPRC courses Level 1

During the June Adriatic Training and Research Centre is organized and held two editions of IMO OPRC Level 1 training in Rijeka. The three-day courses were held June 10 to 12 and 16 to 18 June 2015.

The training courses were attended by participants from Albania, Croatia, Italy and Slovenia.

Courses IMO OPRC Level 1 are designed for operational personnel directly involved in cleaning-up spilled oil on the surface of the sea and the shoreline. Within the three days program, course participants had the practical part of the training, or how to safely use specialized equipment and a demonstration of specialization equipment for intervention at sea, such as various types of protective floating booms, skimmers, response vessels, various type of pumps, etc ..

Presented topics are initiated numerous participants of the course to the constructive discussions and interesting reflections. Among others, discussions were related to the system of response organization and responsibilities in emergency situations. Very interesting discussions on uses of specialized equipment and dispersants took place.

Courses were organized through four modules and after each module, participants have taken tests. Tests show that all the participants possesed great knowledge,  average of almost 80%. Comments at the final discussion of the courses indicated that the majority of participants considered very useful experience of participation in organized courses and they are generally expressed a need for regular practical training.

For the implementation of courses Adriatic Training and Research Centre used support of Evironmental Protection Engineering company  from Piraeus, Greece, as an external expert advisor to assist in conducting all planned training courses.

Training courses schedule

IMO OPRC Level 2 training courses will be held in Rijeka in two edition:

1)   30 June - 3 July  2015

2)   7 - 10 July 2015

The overall objective of the Level 2 course (Response to Marine Oil Spills Course for Supervisors and On-Scene Commanders) is to prepare Supervisors and On-Scene Commanders to coordinate / manage the response to an oil spill.

The course therefore aims at informing senior officials, designated to act as Supervisors/ On-scene Commanders during spill response operations, on the responsibilities of the members of an oil spill response organisation and on how to effectively respond to an oil spill through the deployment of equipment and resources at regional (area) or national levels.

IMO OPRC courses Level 2

During the June and July Adriatic Training and Research Centre is organized and held two editions of IMO OPRC Level 2 training in Rijeka. The four-day courses were held June 30 to 3 July and 7 July to 10 July 2015.

The training courses were attended by participants from Albania, Croatia, Italy and Slovenia.

The overall objective of the IMO OPRC Level 2 course is to prepare Supervisors and On-Scene Commanders to coordinate / manage the response to an oil spill. The course therefore aims at informing senior officials, designated to act as Supervisors/ On-scene Commanders during spill response operations, on the responsibilities of the members of an oil spill response organisation and on how to effectively respond to an oil spill through the deployment of equipment and resources at regional (area) or national levels. The course was designed for senior officers who had been designated, within their respective national, regional (area) or local preparedness and response system, or in the relevant contingency plans to act as Supervisors or On-scene Commanders in case of a marine pollution incident necessitating response either at sea or on shore or both.

Courses were organized through four modules and after each module, participants have taken tests and an simulation of an accident at the end of the course.
